Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 12 (April 3, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Ivan V. Kennedy (ASN: 13014505), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. While performing the hazardous mission of removing enemy booby traps and mines under enemy fire, Private Kennedy discovered an enemy anti-tank mine of a new type. Realizing the extreme danger involved, Private Kennedy warned the men to take cover and, neutralizing the mine, carried it back to his organization for further examination. His alertness and courage in handling an unfamiliar mine resulted in obtaining valuable information. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
