The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Louis A. Vitale (ASN: 12019093), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. Although his company was being attacked by enemy planes while entrucking, Private Vitale, rather than take cover, voluntarily set up a .50 caliber machine gun and directed fire upon the enemy. His courage and disregard for personal safety in the face of this heavy strafing was of material aid in repelling the attacking planes. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
