The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James D. Flaherty (ASN: 12016515), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. While attempting a night flank attack, Corporal Flaherty’s platoon met with heavy enemy machine gun fire. Several members, including the patrol leader, were wounded. On his own initiative and assuming all responsibility, Corporal Flaherty worked his way through this heavy enemy fire and organized the successful withdrawal of the platoon and the evacuation of the wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
