The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade John J. Alongi (ASN: 12022691), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. During an attack by enemy infantry and armored units, Sergeant Alongi drove along a road subjected to heavy enemy artillery and machine gun fire to repair broken communication lines. Forced to abandon his jeep because of intense enemy fire, Sergeant Alongi proceeded on foot and successfully restored communications. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
