Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 12 (April 3, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] William V. Zachodniak (ASN: 6978982), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. Sergeant Zachodniak voluntarily accompanied a night patrol whose dangerous mission was the reconnaissance of an 88-mm. enemy battery. While reconnoitering the position, a strong enemy counter-patrol, which threatened the success of this mission, was ambushed and completely destroyed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
