The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Ollan C. Woodham (ASN: 6399691), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in the period from January to April 1943. When his small patrol was attacked by a considerably stronger enemy force, Sergeant Woodham dug in and remained in contact with this attacking force until he could learn its identity and approximate strength. His courage and initiative under heavy enemy fire gained valuable information for his unit. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
