The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Willoughby G. Shaw (ASN: 0-1292071), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. After being forced to withdraw because of heavy enemy air attacks, Lieutenant Shaw, on his own initiative, organized an attack on an enemy outpost. By his own actions and excellent tactical judgment in the face of heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant Shaw led his men in the successful destruction of enemy forces occupying this position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
