The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] William L. Nimmo (ASN: 0-453001), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. During a heavy engagement, Lieutenant Nimmo, wounded by intense enemy machine gun and mortar fire, directed gun crews under his command until all weapons were destroyed. He refused to leave his men until he had personally supervised their withdrawal. Lieutenant Nimmo’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
