The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Gordon A. Pope (ASN: 0-885004), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, during the period from January to April 1943. On several occasions, Captain Pope, under constant heavy enemy mortar fire, led his patrols deep into enemy territory and obtained valuable information concerning enemy mine fields and troop concentrations. His skill in eluding enemy patrols and returning with accurate information despite extreme danger was an inspiration to his men and of great service to his unit. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
