Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 12 (April 3, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Habard T. Gladhill (ASN: 6848366), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. Sergeant Gladhill, on his own initiative and despite intense fire of enemy machine guns and mortars, remained at his own machine guns until they were destroyed by enemy mortar shells and then, although seriously wounded, continued to fire with his rifle. As a result of this action, Sergeant Gladhill has been reported as missing. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
