Headquarters, United States Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 1133 (March 15, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Herman Holness (ASN: RA-51209231), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Holness distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 31 January 1968 while serving as a Military Policeman of Company C, 716th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Group, 18th Military Police Brigade, on a reaction force mission during the Lunar New Year battle for Saigon. Sergeant Holness’ unit was sent to reinforce a sister element heavily engaged by enemy forces in the vicinity of Phu Tho race track. While moving through the city, the lead vehicle of his unit was savagely attacked by Viet Cong firing automatic weapons and claymore mines. The occupants were seriously wounded and trapped in the open. Ignoring his safety, Sergeant Holness reached the disabled truck and, from behind it, delivered a fierce volume of fire into the enemy positions. Repeatedly braving withering hostile fire, he then began dragging the wounded to safety. He was badly wounded himself in the intense barrage but refused aid until his fellow soldiers had been evacuated. Staff Sergeant Holness’ gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
