Headquarters, U.S. Army, Vietnam, General Orders No. 1235 (March 21, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Ronald P. Kendall (ASN: RA-14938592), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Miller distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 31 January 1968 while serving with a Military Police Unit, Company C, 716th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Group, 18th Military Police Brigade during the Lunar New Year battle in Saigon. Called to repel a Viet Cong attack on an officer billets, his unit responded immediately. While moving up an alley behind the quarters, he lead truck was savagely attacked by insurgents firing claymore mines, automatic weapons and rockets. Specialist Kendall was driving a second vehicle and quickly drove into the alley to rescue the wounded. Withering automatic weapons fire was concentrated on him as he positioned his vehicle to protect his fallen comrades. He was wounded by the intense barrage, but he ignored his injury and helped two of the most serious casualties out of the killing zone. When his unit was called to move into another position, Specialist Kendall returned to the alley to recover his truck. Bullets struck all around him as he moved toward the damaged vehicle. He refused to turn back, reached the truck, and drove it clear despite the enemy’s fully concentrated firepower. Specialist Fourth Class Kendall’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
