The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class John A. Golembiewski, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Golembiewski distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 28 April 1969 while serving as crew chief of an armored escort vehicle of Company C, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Group, 18th Military Police Brigade, accompanying a convoy to Quan Loi. When a truck in the middle of the line detonated a mine, he ordered his V-100 armored escort vehicle forward to provide security. Suddenly the enemy opened up with rocket grenade, machine gun and small arms fire. A rocket propelled grenade hit Specialist Golembiewski’s vehicle, engulfing it in flames, severely burning him and wounding other occupants. After evacuating the vehicle, he and his crew members collected the injured personnel from the other vehicle to the safety of a roadside ditch. By this time a helicopter was approaching their position and was struck by a rocket grenade, killing the door gunner. The crew chief was thrown from the helicopter, and, dazed and wounded, he staggered in the direction of the enemy and fell. Despite his own painful injuries, Specialist Golembiewski scrambled to the fallen crew chief and dragged him away from the exposed position. Then he and his crew members administered first aid to the wounded personnel until an ambulance helicopter arrived to extract them. Specialist Golembiewski’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
