The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Charles R. Miller (ASN: US-54808865), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Miller distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 31 January 1968 while serving with a Military Police Unit, Company B, 716th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Group, 18th Military Police Brigade on a reaction mission during the Lunar New Year battle for Saigon. While patrolling the city late at night, his unit responded to a call for reinforcements from an officers’ billet that was under attack. As he raced to the area, his vehicle was savagely attacked and rendered inoperable by enemy rockets, and he and his comrade were wounded. Although soaked with gasoline, Specialist Miller took up an exposed position near his fiercely burning jeep and delivered deadly fire on the Viet Cong to cover the withdrawal of his fellow soldier. With bullets striking all around him, he then moved to cover behind a tree and fought the determined attackers until he and his partner were forced to withdraw for medical attention. Specialist Fourth Class Miller’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
