The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Jack Kaliner (ASN: 20215452), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 28 June 1944. While in action against the enemy and under heavy machine gun fire, Private Kaliner carried his superior officer, who had been rendered unconscious and delirious by extreme heat and fatigue, to a point shielded from the enemy fire. With the assistance of a litter bearer and while under constant sniper fire Private Kaliner was able to get his officer back to an aid station. While on the way to the aid station, Private Kaliner, assisted by the litter bearer, shot and killed two enemy snipers.
