The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John J. O’Hare (ASN: 32201796), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 22 June 1944. Sergeant O’Hara’s platoon leader and his entire crew were cut off behind the Japanese lines. On six different occasions that day he took his tank deep into the Japanese lines and dismounted, making a personal reconnaissance on foot, under fire, on each occasion, trying to determine their location. Each time he ordered his tank crew to remain inside the tank, clearly indicating his realization of the great danger involved. Late in the afternoon he discovered the body of the officer and two bodies of the crew members, and the burned-out tank.
