The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant Rufus King, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 30 June 1862, while serving with 4th U.S. Artillery, in action at White Oak Swamp, Virginia. First Lieutenant King, when his captain was wounded, succeeded to the command of two batteries while engaged against a superior force of the enemy and fought his guns most gallantly until compelled to retire.
