The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Hilbert Earl Shaw (ASN: 35168749), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 5 July 1944. Private First Class Shaw without hesitation and with complete disregard for his personal safety, in the face of a heavy attack, voluntarily left his position on the inside of the perimeter and made his way across a small knoll and across the face of a slope. He was completely exposed to the front and succeeded in reaching and giving badly needed medical attention to casualties. Private First Class Shaw underwent fire of friendly and enemy troops during this act. His unselfishness in his devotion to duty saved many lives.
