The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Henry N. Vanderpool (ASN: 0-1307593), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 28 June 1944. When the infantry battalion to which he was attached had halted to make preparation for the resumption of the attack, the enemy launched a surprise counterattack. An “air mission” had been requested prior to the Japanese thrust and planes were over head. In the midst of the enemy assault, Lieutenant Vanderpool attempted to relay enemy targets to our planes from a position in the front lines, but found that a bullet had penetrated his radio rendering it useless. Heedless of his own safety, he threw aside his radio and gave valuable assistance on the front line in helping to rebuild the line, directing our own tanks to enemy targets and assisting with the evacuation of the wounded although wounded himself by a piece of shrapnel.
