The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Vincent P. Covuoto (ASN: 32094668), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 26 June 1944. When the ammunition supply of his unit was running low, Technician Fifth Grade Covuoto volunteered to return to the nearest ammunition dump for an additional supply, although he was fully aware that the route back was under enemy fire. He succeeded in making three complete trips. On each occasion he was fired upon by the enemy. On his fourth attempt he was mortally wounded. The ammunition he had succeeded in getting to the guns permitted his unit to complete its mission.
