The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Carl M. Mannah (ASN: 35035992), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 165th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division, at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 6 July 1944. When enemy fire was holding up the advance of a company of our troops and his machine gun section was pinned to the ground, Sergeant Mannah, although fully aware that there was no protection for him at the gun position, left cover and carried ammunition and water across terrain continually swept by enemy fire. After returning to a protected area and after observing that the one man at the gun was having difficulty in getting it into firing position he again, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved to the gun under intense enemy fire and assisted in getting it into action. He was killed at the gun, but the fire from this weapon permitted the rifle company to reorganize.
