Headquarters, 27th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 50 (July 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Kenneth Albert Kyle (ASN: 35108625), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 27 June 1944. East of Mt. Topatchau, Staff Sergeant Kyle volunteered to go with the Battalion Intelligence Officer on a night patrol into enemy area. He penetrated the enemy lines and obtained information as to the location and number of enemy and their actions. This information later aided the battalion in overcoming strong enemy opposition and gaining its objective. During the patrol the enemy were very active and were continually firing into our lines with small arms and mortars. After gathering this valuable data, Staff Sergeant Kyle was fatally shot before he could return to the battalion area.
