The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Phillip Francis Schoeffling (ASN: RA-19877247), United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 14 June 1969. Sergeant Schoeffling distinguished himself while serving as a radio telephone operator in Battery B, 2d Battalion, 320th Artillery, 101st Airborne Division, at Fire Support Base Berchtesgaden, Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours on the cited date, an unknown size enemy force initiated an intense mortar attack against the fire base which knocked out radio communication in the Control Center. Sergeant Schoeffling, with complete disregard for his own safety, left his shelter with a radio and positioned himself outside in the intense mortar fire so as to reestablish communications and thus direct counter mortar fire. Sergeant Schoeffling’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
