The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private] Vincent J. Wysoglad (ASN: 36372353), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On the afternoon of 26 March 1945, near Hoppenheim, Germany, Staff Sergeant Wysoglad, acting squad leader, after deploying his men in a line of skirmishers 100 yards from defensive enemy positions, advanced under enemy fire 25 yards in front of his men. Firing his M-1 into the nearest foxhole, he wounded two Germans manning burp guns. Following a five-minute firefight, Staff Sergeant Wysoglad jumped to his feet and, yelling to his men to follow him, charged the enemy positions, firing from the hip so effectively that he forced sixteen Germans to surrender. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
