The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Evrod Challenor Warner, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Warner distinguished himself while serving as S-3 with 3d Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 2 October 1969, Firebase SERHIDAN came under a heavy attack by an unknown size enemy force. Reacting immediately, Major Warner coordinated his defenses by directing illumination, mortar, artillery, and automatic weapons fire from within the tactical operation center. When radio communication among the friendly elements was lost, Major Warner left the relative safety of the command bunker and dashed from bunker to bunker, rallying the friendly forces to the area of attack. Major Warner courageously exposed himself to the intense hostile fire to transport several wounded soldiers to emergency medical treatment. Major Warner then returned to the contact area and personally led the counter-attack and the eventual repulsion of the enemy. Major Warner’s personal bravery, outstanding leadership, and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
