The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Staff Sergeant William R. Miesowitz, Jr., United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Merced, California, on 11 April 1979. On that date, Sergeant Miesowitz rushed to the area where a truck had crashed and was engulfed in flames. With complete disregard for his own safety, and despite the hazard of intense flames, dense smoke, and exploding tires, Sergeant Miesowitz unhesitatingly approached the flaming vehicle and persevered in his humanitarian efforts until he succeeded in removing the injured driver to a place of safety. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Miesowitz has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
