The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Armor) Andrew Pick O’Meara, Jr. (ASN: 0-87298), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 13 February 1969 while serving as Regimental S-2 with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Major O’Meara was conducting an aerial reconnaissance operation in an area of known enemy activity. Upon seeing several signs of recent movement, he intensified his efforts to locate the enemy by directing his pilot to fly very slowly at treetop level. When he spotted several armed enemy soldiers in the jungle, Major O’Meara directed the aircraft into a left bank over the hostile troops in order to place suppressive fire on them. Immediately the enemy elements opened fire on the friendly helicopter. Disregarding the hostile fusillade to which he was fully exposed, Major O’Meara raked the enemy positions with accurate suppressive fire until he was wounded by a burst of hostile small arms fire. Nevertheless, he refused to allow the pilot to evacuate him and maintained contact with the enemy until friendly reinforcements arrived and engaged the hostile force. Major O’Meara’s outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
