Richard Waldhaus was a civilian working in South Vietnam when he was captured on August 4, 1971. His family and the U.S. Government were not aware of his status as “missing in action” for a year, and became aware only when his name was broadcast on Vietnamese radio as being held with other Americans. He was released on February 12, 1973.

His personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
