Thomas Kalil, an American Civilian working in Southeast Asia, was captured along with fellow civilians John Fritz and James Newingham near Bien Hoa, South Vietnam, on February 8, 1969. His two comrades were among the POWs released in Operation Homecoming in 1973, and they reported that Kalil became ill and died in captivity in June 1969. His remains have never been recovered.
