A Korean War veteran, Lewis Meyer was serving at the Naval Air Station, DaNang, as Assistant Fire Chief in charge of coordinating and standardizing fire departments in I Corp. While on an inspection trip in the northern part of I Corp he was captured with ground forces in Hue on February 1, 1968 and held until his release from captivity on March 27, 1973. In January 2010, Lewis Meyer was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal and two Purple Hearts after intervention on behalf of the former civilian POW by Congressman Duncan Hunter.
