The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Brian Hayden Ward, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Weapon Systems Officer near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 29 July 1972. On that date, Lieutenant Ward was in a flight of four F-4E’s flying escort for two flights of fighter bombers. As the bombers were approaching the target, Lieutenant Ward’s flight observed hostile fighters attacking. Lieutenant Ward and his Aircraft Commander maintained perfect wing position on the lead aircraft and provided protection for him from behind. This allowed him to maneuver into position to shoot down the enemy aircraft. Lieutenant Ward’s professional competence was instrumental in the success of this mission since the flight lead could concentrate on his pursuit and not be concerned with attacks upon himself. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Ward reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
