    January 11, 2010

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major Nathlon N. Jackson, United States Army, for heroism on 11 January 2010, while responding to a house fire near the Army National Guard Readiness Center. After witnessing smoke billowing from a private residence, Major Jackson immediately inquired from a group of bystanders if the occupants had safely exited the building. After learning that an elderly woman may be trapped inside, she acted with complete disregard for her own personal safety, entering the burning home to search for the woman. As the smoke continued to fill the house, she deliberately crawled to the upper floor of the residence, eventually locating the elderly woman in her bedroom. Recognizing that the woman was unresponsive, Major Jackson then proceeded to pick up the woman and carry her over her shoulder towards the lower floor and away from the spreading flames. Exiting the home, she pulled the woman to relative safety nearby and then performed medical aid until she had remained consciousness, and continued to monitor her until emergency medical personnel arrived. Major Jackson’s courageous efforts on that day helped save a life and serve as an example for all Soldiers to follow. Major Jackson’s selfless and heroic actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon herself, the Army National Guard, and the United States Army.
