The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain William Alfred Spencer (AFSN: 15958230/3207061), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Aircraft Commander over Southeast Asia on 25 June 1972. On that date, while flying as lead in a flight of two fighter-bombers, Captain Spencer flew his aircraft on numerous passes against a heavily defended mortar position and bunker and storage area. Despite heavy ground fire and marginal weather, his precise low-angle ordnance deliveries resulted in nine bunkers heavily damaged or destroyed and numerous secondary fires and explosions, depriving hostile forces of vital supplies. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Spencer reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
