The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Field Artillery) William Spencer Reeder, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight on 9 May 1972, while serving as fire team leader of an AH-1G Gunship escorting an American re-supply helicopter in support of besieged Ben Het, Republic of Vietnam. Captain Reeder fearlessly employed his helicopter between the re-supply aircraft and extremely intense small arms and anti-aircraft fire. The skillful employment of the fire team enabled the re-supply aircraft to drop its load and proceed out of the loading zone. Captain Reeder gallantly employed accurate deadly rocket fire on the enemy location while his copilot/gunner placed devastating turret fire under and to the southern side of the re-supply helicopter attempting to divert the enemy’s attention. Seconds later, two anti-aircraft positions opened fire on his aircraft riddling it with hits and mortally wounding his copilot/gunner. Captain Reeder expertly guided the crippled virtually uncontrollable aircraft to a landing. His superb flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
