The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John Stanley Murphy, Jr. (AFSN: 0-3162593/25917224), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Thunderchief pilot with the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 30 June 1968. On that date, Captain Murphy single-handedly silenced a hostile antiaircraft artillery site which blocked an attack on an important truck park and storage area, because of the intensity of fire from its eight guns. Refusing to be deterred by the high volume of fire, Captain Murphy exposed himself to great danger to press his attack to the optimum altitude necessary to obtain a direct hit with his ordnance, thereby silencing the site so that the other members of his flight could complete the destruction of the primary target in a relatively permissive environment. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Murphy reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
