William Gauntt graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Class of 1968. He was interned as a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam after he was shot down on August 13, 1972 and was held until his release on March 27, 1973.

On that date, Captain Gauntt flew an extremely dangerous reconnaissance mission assigned to obtain important photography of the heavily defended railroad network leading northeast from Hanoi. Although handicapped greatly by extremely poor weather conditions and by unavoidable mission delays, Captain Gauntt never wavered in his determination to accomplish his mission, and braving extremely intense antiaircraft artillery fire, he successfully acquired the invaluable intelligence. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Gauntt reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
