Headquarters, 11th Armored Division, General Orders No. 18 (February 1, 1945)

(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Robert W. Dunaway (ASN: 0-532129), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters Battery, ** Field Artillery Battalion, 11th Armored Division. From 31 December 1944 to 2 January 1945, Lieutenant Dunaway was instrumental in assisting the *** Tank Battalion to hold an untenable position and in disorganizing enemy counterattacks by providing accurate artillery fire over a 48-hour period at great personal risk. In order to secure observation, he frequently left his tank and went forward into areas which were under heavy enemy shell and mortar fire to set up observation posts. While evaluating one such position, he was struck by machine gun fire. After receiving treatment for this wound at an aid station, he returned to continue his functions as a forward observer until the battalion to which he was assigned was out of the action.
