Richard Burgess was interned as a Prisoner of War in Southeast Asia after he was captured in South Vietnam on September 25, 1966. In August 1967 he and fellow prisoner Alfonso Riate tunneled under a wall and escaped and evaded the enemy for two days before they were recaptured. He was then sent to a POW camp in North Vietnam and held until his release on March 5, 1973.
