The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Hector Michael Acosta, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an RF-4C Weapon Systems Operator near Vu Chua, North Vietnam, on 11 September 1972. On that date, Lieutenant Acosta planned and flew in a flight assigned to obtain bomb damage assessment of two bridges on the heavily defended Northeast Railroad. Penetrating deep into the heart of North Vietnam, Lieutenant Acosta courageously evaded intense anti-aircraft artillery to obtain invaluable photography. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Acosta reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
