The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Hector Michael Acosta, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an RF-4C Weapon Systems Operator near Vu Chua, North Vietnam, on 11 September 1972. On that date, Lieutenant Acosta planned and flew in a flight assigned to obtain bomb damage assessment of two bridges on the heavily defended Northeast Railroad. Penetrating deep into the heart of North Vietnam, Lieutenant Acosta courageously evaded intense anti-aircraft artillery to obtain invaluable photography. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Acosta reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
