Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 294 (June 27, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Hong Gui Yee (aka: Yee Hong) (ASN: 0-47773), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Chinese Wartime Hsuckan Military Organization, attached to the 25th Infantry Division, in action against the Japanese forces at Putlan, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 3 and 4 June 1945. During the night a powerful enemy force counterattacked the COWHM unit of which Second Lieutenant Yee was rifle platoon leader as it sought to consolidate its position. The fanatical enemy assaulted under cover of rapid grazing machine gun, rifle and hand grenades. All three members of one key machine gun position were killed and the weapon destroyed by a hand grenade. Second Lieutenant Yee, with disregard of his own personal safety, rushed through the darkness and ran to occupy it single-handedly. After the dash in the face of continued machine gun and grenade fire, he found the gun could not be operated. As eight enemy soldiers continued to assault the position, he killed four with his .45 caliber pistol and repulsed the others. Even though he was seriously wounded and in great pain, he refused to be evacuated until the next morning when he was ordered to do so. Second Lieutenant Yee’s gallant actions and devotion to duty were a paramount factor in securing the important mountain, reflecting credit on himself and the military service.
