NARRATIVE TO ACCOMPANY AWARD:
Staff Sergeant George R. Wade distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service as the Security Force Platoon Sergeant, Provincial Reconstruction Team Nuristan, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM from 30 March 2007 to 17 March 2008. Staff Sergeant Wade took the challenge of Security Platoon leadership when offered to him even though it was beyond his rank. He filled this role beyond expectation with great tactical and technical skill and a personal commitment to the safety and well being of the PRT members. Staff Sergeant Wade’s experience proved to be a vital asset to the PRT during numerous operations. Because of his proficiency, Staff Sergeant Wade was hand-picked to oversee security for the first Provincial Development Council held in Parun. His security plan was the first such plan ever for this remote and hostile area in the Nuristan Province. His expertise with communication equipment ensured that the PRT was in constant communication with Forward Operating Base (FOB) KALA GUSH and supporting aircraft through a variety of conventional and unconventional methods. Staff Sergeant Wade’s effectiveness and expertise as an infantry leader was always evident. Of note and as an example was his performance on a dismounted patrol that came under fire from an unknown number of enemy in elevated positions. Staff Sergeant Wade coordinated indirect fires while ensuring wounded soldiers were treated and evacuated. His calm but urgent demeanor and poise under fire minimized serious injury to those in his charge and prevented the loss of life. Staff Sergeant Wade ensured complete accountability of personnel during numerous rocket attacks against FOB KALA GUSH. This task required him to leave the security and protection of his bunker, putting himself at risk by moving through open space to ensure the safety of his personnel. After obtaining accountability, he would then move to the mortar pit where he assisted with offensive operations that were outside of small arms range from the FOB. Staff Sergeant Wade’s dedication to his job and to the soldiers for whom he was responsible was based on h is moral and ethical character. He worked hard, gave up sleep and planned to the minute detail; not for personal recognition but to ensure the safety and well being of his charges. Every bullet or rocket fired at his people was a personal affront to him and had to be planned against and prevented. Staff Sergeant Wade’s extensive technical knowledge, leadership skills and poise under pressure have contributed immeasurably to the success of the PRT in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. The distinctive accomplishments of Staff Sergeant Wade reflect great credit upon himself, Task Force BAYONET, Combined/Joint Task Force 82, the United States Army, and the Department of Defense.
