The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Robert John Coffey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 4 May 1863, while serving with Company K, 4th Vermont Infantry, in action at Bank’s Ford, Virginia. Sergeant Coffey single-handedly captured two officers and five privates of the 8th Louisiana Regiment (Confederate States of America).
