The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Sergeant Marion L. Holloway (MCSN: 1846589), United States Marine Corps, for heroism while in the performance of his duties and while serving with Sub Unit ONE, Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron (1)-262, on 15 March 1960. As Crew Chief of a helicopter on a routine training flight over the Isle of Rhodes, Greece, and during operations not involving combat with an enemy, he voluntarily, decisively and without heed for his own safety saved the life of Victor H. Helmker, a fellow crewman. During the flight his timely action in seizing hold of his companion as he plunged himself through the cabin door to certain death 2,000 feet below and in hanging on to him until the aircraft landed, in spite of the frantic efforts of this man to break free while dangling in space, saved a life. His conduct consummated under hazards of darkness, the blast of a 90-knot slipstream, wild pummeling from the rescued man, and the continuous possibility of being yanked to his own death at any moment, exhibited courage, stamina, and devotion to duty in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
