Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 2002 (April 3, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Richard Eugene Engle (ASN: US-51775434), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Engle distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 2 February 1968, while serving as a rifleman with Company A, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a search and destroy mission near Quang Tri, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force and sustained a casualty, Private First Class Engle exposed himself to the enemy fire as he engaged and killed an enemy sniper. Disregarding his own safety, Private First Class Engle then moved forward to assist his wounded comrade. At this time Private First Class Engle was mortally wounded. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
