The Secretary of the Army of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Army Commendation Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant Craig S. Sotebeer, United States Army, for valor and extraordinary achievement during ground combat operations against enemy forces in a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device incident at Forward Operating Base SUMMERALL, Iraq, on 1 June 2004. Without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Sotebeer immediately moved into an unsecured area to treat and evacuate over 30 Iraqi casualties. Additionally, he controlled and supervised a chaotic scene by directing personnel to perform proper combat casualty care and evacuation. His actions were performed well above his grade level and medical scope of practice. Sergeant Sotebeer’s bravery and dedication to his fellow soldiers on the battlefield upholds the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon him, Task Force DRUMFIRE, and the United States Army.
