Headquarters, SIXTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 8 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Coast Artillery Corps) Herbert J. P. Sullivan (ASN: 0-405772), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 68th Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion, in Italy on 17 October 1944. From an exposed forward observation post Captain Sullivan was adjusting artillery fire on enemy positions when the enlisted man assisting him received penetrating wounds of the head. Although fully exposed to the enemy’s fire he administered first aid and with the help of an enlisted man, succeeded in evacuating the wounded man down the face of a forty foot cliff to where further evacuation could be effected by litter. While in this position they received a second concentration of enemy mortar fire. Unmindful of his own safety, Captain Sullivan covered the injured man with his own body in order to protect him from further injury by the flying rock fragments and shrapnel. By his gallantry and devotion to his men Captain Sullivan reflected credit upon himself and the United States Army.
