The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fifth Grade Maurice C. Mayes (ASN: 17175835), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, on 27 March 1945. Upon awakening at 0200 hours and finding an adjacent tent quarters in flames, Corporal Mayes, at the risk of his life, entered the burning tent, awakened the occupants, and led them to safety as the structure collapsed. The courage and bravery displayed by Corporal Mayes reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Armed Forces.
