The Secretary of the Army of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Army Commendation Medal with Combat “V” to Specialist Billie D. Gossett, United States Army, for heroic and valorous achievement under Task Force 1st Battalion, 108th Armor, during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM III. Your courage and personal sacrifice as well as your impressive display as a combat soldier, your dedication to mission and your platoon was notable when ensuring the safety of your fellow soldier and should be commended. Your actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of a Mortarman and a Rough Rider and reflect great credit upon you, your unit, the 48th Brigade Combat Team, and the United States Army.
NARRATIVE TO ACCOMPANY AWARD:
Specialist Billie D. Gossett exceptionally distinguished himself while serving in the Mortar Platoon in Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 108th Armor in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM III. Specialist Gossett on 6 August 2005 was the Gunner for his M11114 HMMWV while traveling on Route Fatboy on a Corps-level EOD escort mission to an IED site when his crew’s truck was hit by an IED. Specialist Gossett received shrapnel in the arm and leg during the blast but still was able to dismount the destroyed truck with his crew served weapon and provided immediate security. Specialist Gossett was identified as injured by the convoy medic but waved off medical care as other crew members were more severely injured, and continued to maintain composed and cover his sector of security while the medic worked on his crew members. Specialist Gossett continued to provide security until the Medical Evacuation Helicopter arrived on the scene, and was then forced by the Section Sergeant to be relieved of his security position. Specialist Gossett returned to the Mortar Platoon with a profile for his injuries received, but again acted selflessly by volunteering for duty when the platoon’s personnel were limited due to injuries and Leave.
