The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Paul Mier, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 16 January 1991, in support of Operation DESERT STORM. Staff Sergeant Jeffrey P. Mier distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight over hostile Iraqi territory on 16 January 1991. On that date, Sergeant Mier lead a low level three ship cell of B-52’s against a highly defended Iraqi airfield to strike taxiways leading from the hardened aircraft shelter to the runway. Exemplary airmanship and exceptional technical skills demonstrated by each crewmember in the cell enabled them to evade ground fire, hostile acquisition radar and emissions, and surface-to-air missiles while ensuring tactical surprise. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Mier reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
